Wonder, Watch, and Wait

“The holidays” embrace many traditions around the world, particularly in the northern hemisphere where days are darkest in December. We yearn for the return of the light, enlightenment, something new.

St. Nicholas Day, Bodhi Day, Santa Lucia, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Yule, Christmas, Kwanza, New Years’ Eve. They all invite wonder, watching, and waiting. Candles. Fire. Gifts. Nature. Reflection. Communal celebration.

My spiritual practice now is a bit eclectic, but I am most schooled in the Christian tradition, having grown up in it. The Advent season begins four weeks before Christmas. It observes the anticipation of the arrival of Jesus. Each week in Advent has a different theme. The first is hope. The second is peace. The third is joy. The fourth is Love.

Hope, peace, joy, and love. What greater gifts could anyone give or receive, no matter what we believe about historical happenings, the nightly news, or ultimate reality?

When I worked closely with young children at Wonder & Wisdom, we danced gingerly around the holidays in order to include children and families with differing beliefs. We explored as many traditions as we could together. Solstice was a favorite.

But culture crept in, and we could not avoid the issue of presents under a tree. There was wide disparity in families’ ability to afford or supervise the making of gifts. This led to tears and tantrums. We finally decided to make group gifts together at Wonder & Wisdom. One child was perceptive enough to make two, “just in case.” Crafts came easily to her, and she didn’t want anyone to be disappointed. She well understood the gift of giving.

When it came to the spirit of the season we learned to listen—to let the children lead. It turned out that they had great clarity about the holidays. They were all about angels!

What do angels do? They inspire wonder. They watch over us. They wait patiently with the intention of hope, peace, joy, and love. Patience has always been part of my learning edge. I notice the proximity between patience and patients.

What are you hoping for?

How do you experience peace in your life?

What makes you joyful?

How do you express love for yourself and others?

‘Tis the season for healing and Graceful Mischief for The Common Good.

Wonder. Watch. Wait. Celebrate!
